Oxford Walk

(See “Oxford Walk” map, here.)

This short stroll gives you the gist of the city and the university. With my self-guided walk, a visit to a few colleges—including Christ Church College, and a pass through the Ashmolean Museum, you’ve covered the town.

• Start on Broad Street at the cobbled little cross in the pavement in the middle of the street; it’s a few steps down from the TI.

Broad Street

This street was originally the ditch that ran along the outside of the Anglo-Saxon town wall (now gone). Looking up the street, you have the city behind you and the colleges mostly in front of you. At the top of the street are the grandest edifices in town—the university buildings (distinct from the colleges).

• But first, turn your attention to the middle of the street.

The Cross in the Road marks the spot where the emphatically Catholic Queen Mary (a.k.a. “Bloody Mary”) had three local bishops, known as “the Oxford Martyrs,” burned at the stake for heresy in 1555. Their crime: Protestantism. The type of sectarian violence that convulses parts of the Muslim world today was the norm in Europe 500 years ago—for an entire century.
